Sauerteig Farmhouse Ale BottleSauerteig Farmhouse Ale Label

Sauerteig Farmhouse Ale

Sauerteig is German for sourdough and this beer was brewed with rye, spelt, wheat and barley – the same ingredients as sourdough bread as prepared by Byron Fry of Fry’s Red Wheat Bakery. This beer literally is liquid bread. It is tough to pour bread from a bottle but in this case it works pretty well. The Sauerteig Farmhouse Ale pours a lightly clouded, golden colour topped with a full two fingers of head. The head settles moderately leaving the glass’ sides free of lacing. This farmhouse ale smells of wheat, malt and has a citrus freshness to the aroma. Rye surprisingly does not come through in any strength despite its precedence in the ingredients list. The flavour kicks off with big carbonation and a full bodied wheat experience. Citrus notes along side light coriander make up the body in a fairly crisp package. The barley malt makes itself known through a malt forward flavour but much like the smell, rye content is rather hidden in the mix. Overall this beer has great flavour, a big body and a bit of an alcohol punch to boot. The farmhouse ale may not be well known but it is a delicious addition to the roster of BC Craft Beer.
