The nature of Chile’s wine industry in the past seemed to mitigate against small, boutique wineries, but as the country moves forward and Chile strives to find its own wine-identity we are beginning to see more and more small production-philosophy driven wineries evolving the face of the Chilean wine market. One of the wineries that we are excited to share with you comes close to qualifying is the biodynamically farmed Matetic winery. It is a brilliantly run winery whose youthful vineyards will only get better with the passage of time.
Corralillo, is the name of the century-old winery and cellar that still stands to this day. It was once used in the making of wine using the Mission grape, an indigenous grape variety to Spain, which later played a huge role in the missions in California and where it got its name. (The grape is also called the Criolla grape)

The 2007 Syrah Corralillo offers an alluring perfume of lavender, blueberry, bacon, crushed black pepper, game, and violet notes.
On the palate, it’s deliciously ripe with succulent blackberry and fig fruit, liberally laced with toasty spice, anise and a briary edge, which leaves you with a mouthwatering feel on the finish.
Only 2,900 cases were made of this already complex wine, which will continue to blossom with another 4-6 years of cellaring and will drink well through 2027.
Not only is this wine great, but so is their winery, which was listed on Wine Spectator’s top 100. Decanter magazine gave this 5 stars, which is their highest rating, and Mr. Parker gave it 92 points.
Check out their website for information on wine tours and a possible stay in the guesthouse.
The dark berry and tar flavors found in Syrah meld gracefully into sheep's milk cheeses, from young to old. If you’re looking for something more substantial, pair with your favorite steak with a peppercorn sauce, or spicy sausage.
