We are absolutely thrilled to bring “the nose of wine”, Alexandre Schmitt, to Canada to deliver his fascinating sensory course co-presented by James Cluer, Master of Wine.
Alexandre is widely considered to be the world's leading expert in olfaction. He consults to a host of the most famous wineries in the world on sensory evaluation, including Petrus, Lafite, Cheval Blanc, Yquem, Opus One, Dominus, Harlan and many others. He teaches sensory evaluation at the University of Bordeaux and Oporto, and works with a host of other corporations such as cooperages and distilleries. Profiled in major magazines such as Decanter, he has become known as "the nose of wine".
There are 2 courses, Level 1 and Level 2. Each level focuses on different grape varieties.
For each grape variety you will smell a number of pure essences commonly associated with that grape, on perfume strips. We will then taste classic wines made from those grapes so you can learn to identify those aromas in the glass, and improve your tasting ability. It's fascinating and you will dramatically improve your ability to taste, describe and identify wines.
These courses are appropriate and beneficial for all levels of wine knowledge. My advice would be to take the Level 1 and 2 courses on consecutive days, or you can start with the Level 2 if you are more interested in those particular grapes. Alex will only come to Canada once per year at most.
I would consider it mandatory for wine writers, essential for winemakers, a great advantage for all people in sales and marketing, extremely useful for the student of wine, and absolutely fascinating for wine lovers.
