The rediscovery of the old Mencía vines by Alvaro Palacios at the end of the 20th century put on the wine map the remote and mountainous Bierzo area. His lead was followed by star winemakers such as Raúl Pérez and Mariano García. Soon after, the scenic region of Ribeira Sacra was also rediscovered offering another side of Mencía. These regions went, in little over a decade, from being almost unknown, to producing unique mineral reds that have even elicited comparisons with Guigal?s famous Cote Roties. They have added diversity to Spain?s wine landscape and captivated demanding critics. Now it?s time to evaluate the best of these stars in our first-ever Mencía blind tasting.
