The final leg of the Italian tour taps into the deep south of Italy, into the regions of Puglia, Campania andBasilicata and the islands such as Sicily and Sardinia. The wonderful well-structured Aglianico grape is found in the south producing famous high-quality wines such as Taurasi, whilst Primitivo (related to Zinfandel) makes juicy and ripe affordable reds from Puglia. Sicily is flying the flag of modernisation with many fine examples of Fiano, Catarrato and Nero d'Avola whilst Sardinia is thriving with refreshing varieties such as Vermintino. This is truly an area of the wine world that needs plenty of attention through tasting!
