A Father’s Dream, a Family’s Journey: The beginning of Volcanic Hills Winery
Since the 1960s it was Sarwan Gidda’s dream to grow grapes that would produce world-class wines. This all began when his father, Mehtab Gidda, came to Canada from a small town in East Punjab, India. Having just $5 in his pocket and not a single word of English in his vocabulary, the dream of a better life began in 1958, when he settled in the Land of Wonder –the Okanagan Valley. The entire family respects Mehtab for his courageousness and disciplined work ethic. They were the first and only Indo-Canadian family in West Kelowna for 15 years. The family purchased their first property in 1963 and soon after were the largest apple farmers in West Kelowna. In 1978, Sarwan and wife Sudarshana pursued a new venture of growing grapes. Today, their 80 acres of grapes, apples and cherries are managed by Sarwan’s family. In May 2010, the children fulfilled their father’s dream of establishing Volcanic Hills Estate Winery.
The old adage: It all starts in the vineyard. “My father really knows and understands how to grow Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer,” says proprietor Bobby Gidda, “and because our vineyard sites offer near-perfect growing conditions, these varietals have become our flagship wines. Our focus is to produce distinctive, fruit-forward wines by utilizing premium grapes.”
All our wines have the BC VQA Mark of Quality, so you are guaranteed the wine has been produced from 100-percent BC-grown grapes. The vineyards are located on volcanic soils that impart a distinct minerality to our wines.
One-hundred percent of the grapes used for making Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Rosé, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Zweigelt are self-rooted, and come from our estate vineyards. Some vineyards are newly planted. The oldest are 38 years old. Currently, we have 65 acres of vineyards in West Kelowna, within 10 kilometers of our winery.
Volcanic Hills Winemaking Philosophy
We believe in making wine with minimal interference and low-impact techniques, to showcase varietal characteristics through our sustainable grape-growing practices. We also try to be creative in making unique and unusual blends.
Origin of the Volcanic Hills Winery Name
The new 15,000-square-foot winery is on the southeastern slope of a 60-million-year-old dormant volcano, Boucherie Mountain, which inspired the name Volcanic Hills. Continuing with volcano lingo is our medium-bodied red blend called “Magma”, and “Eruption”. The names were spawned with help from customers filling out an in-house ballot.
