The Cesari household has always been passionate about wine: Umberto's father, Ilario, ran one of the most historic Osterias in Bologna. However, Umberto was not satisfied with following in his father's footsteps. He preferred to pursue a dream: to not just sell great wine, but create it.
Founder, pioneer, ambassador
In the early '60s Umberto Cesari purchased a 20-hectare vineyard on the hills of Castel San Pietro, founded the company which bears his name, and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime: to turn Sangiovese into a great wine, typical of its own area, but loved worldwide.
Umberto Cesari is among the first to focus on this grape variety and popularise it at aninternational level.
A passion for quality
Quality and localness are truly what inspire our work. To this end, we have invested in cutting edge research and facilities, purchased native grape vineyards, and launched collaborations withUniversity of Bologna's Agricultural Department as well as with professional oenologists andagronomists. The heart of our production are finely structured wines obtained from local grape varieties that undergo an extended ageing process using modern technologies and respectingtraditional techniques.
LAND & WINE
Our wines are created in Emilia Romagna, on the hills of Castel San Pietro Terme, 250-400 metres above sea level. Our 170-hectare vineyards are protected by the striking Calanchi Azzurri (badlands), enjoying an ideal micro-climate with a wide temperature range, constant wind, and a lot of sun.
LOCALNESS AND QUALITY
Celebrating our local grape varieties to create great wine: this has always been Umberto Cesari's mission. 4 fine local grape varieties form the core of our production: Sangiovese, Albana,Pignoletto, and Trebbiano. Alongside these are the very bestinternational grapes (mostly used for blends): Sauvignon,Merlot, and Chardonnay.
