Encostas de Estremoz wines are born on the hillsides surrounding Estremoz, at Quinta da Esperança. At this estate, we adapt innovative grape growing techniques to our situation, inspired by the best of the New World and always remaining attentive to preserving our national identity where the Portuguese grape varieties have something unique and relevant to offer to the greater world.

Our first vines were planted in 1993 and we now have a total of 100 hectares. Our range of grapes is wide and varied, including those from the Douro and the Alentejo such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Alicante Bouschet and Aragonez, Trincadeira as well as the international Cabernet Sauvignon.

Our vineyard has been an Alentejo pioneer in several aspects such as the installation of a drip irrigation system which allows controlling water stress, the development of higher canopies than traditional in the Alentejo and the fact that 90% of our harvest is carried out mechanically during the night in order to preserve the aromas and the quality of our grapes that the intense heat of the Alentejo day might damage.

We are now implementing precision viticulture techniques, putting into practice the celebrated saying “Wine is made in the vineyard.”

In 2001, Quinta da Esperança entered into a new phase with the construction of a winery so that we might produce our own brand of wine. Since then, our first wines have been released, D. Joana, and Encostas de Estremoz red and white. 2002 saw the launch of Terras de Estremoz red, followed by the introduction of Encostas de Estremoz single varietals in 2003. Finally, in 2006, we released our top wine DJ Encostas de Estremoz Reserva 2003, aimed at the premium market.

Throughout these years, we have won a selection of awards at national and international competitions.

We are currently exporting to markets such as France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Austria, Canada, the USA, Brazil and Angola. Our prime targets include the USA (the East Coast), and emerging wine markets such as India and China.

As a part of our strategy, we opened our wine tourism facilities in2008 with the capacity to host 70 people for wine tastings and other events.
