Macari Vineyards, located on the North Fork of Long Island in Mattituck, New York, is owned and operated by the Macari Family. The winery was founded by owners Joseph Macari Sr., his wife, Katherine, and Joseph Macari Jr., who is at the helm of the winery with his wife, Alexandra and their children. The Macari family has owned the 500-acre waterfront estate for over fifty years, though Macari Vineyards was not established until 1995.  In June 2009, the Macari family opened a second tasting room located on the Main Road in the town of Cutchogue, adding twenty acres of vines to their vineyard.

The Macaris are careful environmental stewards of the land − what was once potato fields has been transformed to a 200 acre vinegarden with additional fields of compost and fallow farmland. Macari Vineyards is also a home to Texas longhorns, Spanish goats, Sicilian donkeys, horses, ducks and rabbits.  Alongside acres of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viogner, Grüner Veltliner, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Gris, Pinot Meunier and Syrah, members of the Macari team frequently spot blue herons, red tail hawks, vultures, ospreys, eagles, red foxes and groundhogs. The biodiversity of the Macari family farm provides an extraordinary grape growing environment that yields some of the finest fruit on the East Coast.

Joseph Macari Jr. is considered to be a pioneer in the movement towards natural farming on Long Island through his adoption of biodynamic principals since the vineyard’s first plantings. Extensive soil preparation, a rich composting program, meticulous cover cropping and a passionate respect for wildlife creates a distinctive place for Macari’s 200 acres of vines to thrive.

Our winemaking team is led by Kelly Urbanik from St. Helena, California. Kelly’s love of wine stems from early childhood, growing up closely connected to vineyards in her hometown. From a young age, she worked on her grandfather’s vineyard and enjoyed making homemade wine with her father and grandfather. Kelly received a Bachelor of Science degree from University of California, Davis in Viticulture and Enology with a minor in French. She has worked at a number of prestigious wineries including Beringer in California and Maison Louis Jadot in France under the tutelage of legendary winemaker Jacques Lardière. Kelly arrived to the North Fork of Long Island in 2006 and has since been honored with many winemaking awards and recognitions including 90+ points from Wine Spectator, medals from the New York Wine and Food Classic (including best in category), medals from the International Woman's Wine Competition and honors from Decanter and Wine Enthusiast magazines.

Helmut Gangl is Macari's consultant winemaker from Illmitz, Austria. Helmut studied at the University of Agriculture in Vienna and works for the Federal Office of Viticulture in Eisenstadt, Austria specializing in grape viruses and viticulture research. He is a member of the Austrian Tasting Commission and is a judge at many international wine competitions. Along with his wife, Katharina, Helmut owns and operates Gangl Wines located in Illmitz in the Burgenland wine region.  Helmut’s specialties at Macari are the Block E dessert wine and Early Wine Chardonnay.  Helmut was extremely honored when Macari's 2008 Block E dessert wine was selected to be served at The White House for a Governors Dinner in March of 2011.

Our Vineyard team is co-managed by Joseph M. Macari and Eric Andersen.  Joseph M. Macari has worked at Macari Vineyards since the planting of the vineyards in 1995. Working extensively alongside his father, pruning, harvesting, spreading compost and biodynamic preparations, has inspired him to further his experience and appreciation of viticulture.  In 2009, Joseph spent a harvest season in Argentina as an intern at MASI in Tupongato, Mendoza, berry sampling, crushing, pressing and perfecting his now fluent Spanish. In May of 2011, he graduated from Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, New York with an Associate in Applied Science in Viticulture and Wine Technology.  While in Canandaigua, Joseph visited and interned at numerous vineyards in the Finger Lakes and Niagara Escarpment, spending time with and learning from many vineyard managers and owners.  In fall of 2011, he returned to the North Fork for his first harvest as Vineyard Manager and is proud to bring what he has learned in vineyards around the world back home and carry on the legacy of ecological stewardship and a deep passion for the land.

A native of Kansas City, Eric Andersen began his professional career working in viticulture as a research assistant for the University of Missouri’s Institute for Continental Climate Viticulture and Enology in Columbia, Missouri.  He maintained over forty viticulture related experiments across the state of Missouri including the organization and execution of various canopy management and propagation trials, as well as extensive bud and cane data collection. Eric began working at Macari Vineyards in the summer of 2010 as Vineyard Manager and currently supervises a team of ten vineyard staff members year-round and more than twenty during harvest season.  When not in the vineyard, Eric maintains tractors and other mechanical equipment.  Frequently attending seminars at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County to learn local viticulture techniques, Eric strongly believes that winemaking begins in the vineyard, and strives to improve the vines year after year.

Our Mattituck Tasting Room (150 Bergen Avenue, Mattituck, NY 11952) is open daily, year round for wine tastings. We offer several tasting flights and wines by the glass or bottle to enjoy overlooking the vineyard. We showcase domestic and imported artisanal cheese and charcuterie pairings to accompany our wines. Our Cutchogue Tasting Room (24385 Main Road, Cutchogue, NY 11935) is a smaller more intimate location where you can enjoy a tasting at the copper bar or wines by the glass or bottle outside on our sunny deck. We require advance reservations if you are traveling in a bus or limousine.
