Our winery’s story actually begins in post war Greece: Sarantos Moularadellis was seeking a better life and saw the opportunity to emigrate to Australia. Constantina Athanassopoulou was too young to leave her family, however her older sister managed to emigrate ‘down under’ by agreeing to marry a man she had never met. Once firmly settled in Australia she invited the now 17 year old Constantina (Nina) to join her; Nina farewelled her parents and made the three month boat journey to the other side of the world alone, learning what English she could during the voyage.

Several years later, Sarantos and Nina met while working in the Riverland. They married and bought a property with land for growing fruit, a passion for which they shared. They planted an orange grove, as well as a vineyard, which they expanded over time and it was this hard life, that of a small farmer, into which they raised their three children.

The children helped their parents in the vineyard and in the 1970s when Sarantos (or Steve as he’s affectionately around at the winery) built by hand a small winery on their property, eldest son Bill was first exposed to winemaking. This led him to study winemaking at the famous Roseworthy college of Adelaide University.


Finishing his degree in 1985, Bill was determined to set up his own winery and he asked his parents for assistance. They gave him the corner of their property (where Steve’s small winery was located), and loaned some money to buy equipment and Kingston Estate Wines was officially born.

As demand for his wines increased Bill had to extended the winery, which eventually meant that several rows of vines had to be pulled up to allow for further expansion. While this has happened several times in the winery’s history, it was always a hard thing to do given these vines had been hand planted, hand pruned and hand picked by Nina and Steve for decades.


Kingston Estate is an innovative and customer focused winery which exports wine to all major markets around the world. Under Bill’s management, we have grown to a size which enables us to offer a diverse range of wines to the market, sourcing fruit from both our own five vineyards as well as independent growers throughout South Australia.

Family remains core to our whole business, which, whilst centered around the Moularadellis family who own and run the winery, also includes our loyal staff as well as our grape growers. Being a family winery allows us to make decisions with a long term perspective in mind and in a business that relies on the weather, this is a distinct advantage.


Our Greek heritage is communicated subtly: the logo, which is featured on all our wines, includes the gold head of Dionysis, the Greek God of wine. Additionally Bill has always been keen for his style of wine to be consistent with Greek family dining – gathering family and friends for a feast of rustic Mediterranean dishes enjoyed with quality yet unpretentious wine. Or as Nina once said, ‘wines from our dining table to yours.’
