Kenefick Ranch Vineyards is owned by retired San Francisco neurosurgeon Dr. Thomas P. Kenefick, and his two children Caitlin and Chris Kenefick.
A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Dr. Kenefick is a product of the University of Minnesota Medical School and the Mayo Clinic who, in 1969, ventured west and joined San Francisco Neurosurgical Medical Group. Shortly thereafter he fell in love with the Napa wine country and its products and began cultivating his new passion for wine growing and wine making.
In 1978 Dr. Kenefick acquired 125-acre vineyard property at the foothills of the Palisades Mountains in Calistoga. This vineyard was head pruned, dry farmed, old Italian varietals and over the next 20 years these were replaced with Bordeaux varietals on vertical shoot positioning and drip irrigating for higher quality grapes.
Kenefick Ranch consists of 125 acres of mostly red Bordeaux varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Marsanne and Grenache Blanc are grown for white wine. Petite Sirah and Syrah complete the portfolio. Ten percent of production is used in Kenefick Ranch wines while the rest of the fruit is sourced out to Etude, Lewis Cellars, Cade-Plumpjack, Merryvale, Raymond, Caymus and several other small producers.
