Established in 1972, Jordan Vineyard & Winery was inspired by the great wine estates of France and the timeless connection between food, wine and hospitality.
Founders Tom and Sally Jordan were maverick pioneers with a unique vision. They wanted to be the first to create a Bordeaux-style California Cabernet Sauvignon that was approachable while young yet aged gracefully. Located in Sonoma's Alexander Valley, the home for their wine would be an extraordinary chateau combining winemaking facilities, guest suites, and kitchen and dining areas under one roof. The couple set a standard for American wine quality and wine country hospitality—a top standard that is still held at Jordan today.
Under the guidance of second-generation vintner John Jordan and Rob Davis, the winemaker whose hands have crafted every vintage of Jordan since the inaugural 1976, Jordan Vineyard & Winery continues to innovate and elevate through award-winning wines and hospitality. From advancements in fruit sourcing, oak aging, precision farming and conserving natural resources to diversifying agriculture and creating new visitor experiences at our Healdsburg winery, Jordan maintains a relentless quest to improve with every vintage.
Jordan Estate is nestled in the Alexander Valley of Sonoma County, where the iconic Jordan Winery Chateau overlooks nearly 1,200 acres of rolling hills and vineyards dedicated to agriculture, hospitality and conservation.
Unique amongst Healdsburg wineries, more than three-quarters of the scenic estate has been preserved as natural habitat—an oasis where craggy oak trees pepper the landscape, geese and ducks swim the lakes, and rabbits and turkeys roam the hills. The property includes 112 acres of grapevines, 18 acres of olive trees, a one-acre garden, two lakes and several grazing pastures. The diversity of ecosystems on the estate encourages beneficial insects and other predators that support our sustainable farming practices.
Second-generation vintner John Jordan continues to preserve the great ecological richness of this property and share its breathtaking vistas through hospitality. He has returned cattle ranching to the estate, invited conservationists to study resident and migratory birds, and appointed arborists to care for mature trees that have towered over the estate for hundreds of years. Numerous sustainability certifications have also been achieved.
John Jordan calls the estate home and welcomes guests to enjoy his backyard through Jordan Estate Rewards experiences and the Jordan Estate Tour & Tasting.
The iconic chateau illustrated on every bottle of Jordan wine is the soul of Jordan Vineyard & Winery. The chateau houses winemaking facilities, kitchen, dining room, guest suites, tasting library, wine cellars and offices under one crowning roof.
In 1974, Tom and Sally Jordan turned their attention from winegrowing to building a magnificent winery near Healdsburg—a chateau that would combine food, wine and hospitality in such a way that visitors would feel as if they had traveled to France without leaving California.
Armed with French architecture books and vivid memories from trips to the best wineries in Bordeaux, they secured the services of San Francisco architect Bob Arrigoni to realize their vision. The collaboration resulted in a blueprint for a 58,000-square-foot French-inspired chateau devoted equally to winemaking and hospitality. They broke ground in 1975, and miraculously, the production wing of the winery—including 12 towering 6,000-gallon oak casks—was finished one week before the first harvest of Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon in 1976.
Within three years, construction was complete. The dining room overlooked the oak cask room, a kitchen abutted the cellars and guest suite doors opened to the barrel room. The thoughtful design integrating hospitality and production captured France's old-world elegance in every detail, making national headlines.
Apart from a small addition to the kitchen, the unique chateau's original footprint has remained untouched, a testament to the Jordans' foresight. Guests can explore the Winery Chateau through our Winery Tour & Library Tasting, which features wine tasting with food pairings.
