In the 3rd century BC the Rioja region was inhabited by the Berones, a warrior people of Celtic origin whose settlements extended from the Sierra de Cantabria in the north to the Sierra de la Demanda to the south. This warrior people, who also grew crops, raised cattle, made pottery and metalwork, called their land Beronia.
In 1973 a group of businessmen and friends of a Gastronomic Society founded Bodegas Beronia, named in tribute to the primitive inhabitants of this beautiful land. A passion for fine food and high quality wines was the starting point for the famous aged red wines that the bodega produces.
After the last harvest it was estimated that 6 million kilos of grapes were brought. The grapes are selected by Matías Calleja, the winery's technical director, from the 850 hectares of vineyard located less than 10 kilometres from the winery, in the purest château style. All the vineyards are specially selected and the grape varieties used are the indigenous ones authorised by the DOCa Rioja – Tempranillo (90%), Graciano (3%) Mazuelo (3%) and Viura (4%).
Bodegas Beronia is committed to producing quality wine that expresses the character of the terroir – a philosophybased on respect for the environment and its ability to adapt to the new market trends whilst retaining the essence of Rioja.
Matías Calleja describes it perfectly: "We combine leading edge technology with traditional wine making methods."
