Barrister's Beginnings

THE JOURNEY of Barrister Winery began as two lawyers, Greg Lipsker and Michael White, were vacationing with their families in British Columbia. En route, they stopped in a local shop to buy wine and walked out with a five-gallon Zinfandel wine making kit.

FIVE GALLONS turned into 50 gallons, which then turned into crushing 1½ tons of grapes in Greg’s garage in 2000. Validation came when they submitted their wine to the Indy International Wine Competition and walked away with three golds and a silver medal.  Their passion ignited, they forged ahead with a mix of trial and error, conversations with local vintners, and courses at Walla Walla College. In 2001, Barrister Winery was launched.

The On-going Story

AS BARRISTER GREW, so did the accolades. Vintage after vintage won awards, including “Best of Show” at the prestigious Los Angeles Wines of the World competition. As well, Barrister Wines claim consistent 90+ point scores in the industry’s most prestigious wine magazines.

BARRISTER'S AWARD-WINNING WINES are made from grapes sourced from some of Washington's most prestigious vineyards. The grapes are handpicked and sorted, fermented in small lots and barrel-aged in French, American and Hungarian Oak for 16 to 36 months. All production is handled on site, at the Winery. Greg and Michael are involved, hands on, throughout the process.

BARRISTER, whose signature style is characterized by a lush, fruit forward flavor, silky mouthfeel and soft tannins, now draws world-wide attention and recently earned high praise as one of Washington’s top wineries in Paul Gregutt’s book, Washington Wines and Wineries; Second Edition.

The Winery

BARRISTER found its home in 2004 in an historic 100-year-old building in Spokane’s Davenport Arts District. The 25,000 square foot facility houses production, a large single-stack barrel room, an expansive tasting room and a one-of-a-kind event venue. The old brick and massive timber structure creates a unique ambiance that nicely blends a bit of Spokane history with the historic art of winemaking.
