Grab a Glass of Wine and Watch Your Favourite Sport

The Olympics are in full swing, and I don’t know about you, but the Winter Games have always been my favourite. Watching the daring bravado of the downhill skiers and ski jumpers, being captivated with the elegance and grace of the figure skaters, and of course Canadian favourites: hockey and curling. The best part? I can watch all the events from the comfort of my own couch, without ever having to step out into the cold, wintery climes. And I can do so comfortably with a glass of my favourite vino.

This Olympics let’s have a little wine-ter fun and pair some wines with some of the sporting events:

Figure Skating paired with Prosecco

Figure Skating is oh-so delicate and pretty but with tons of energy and pizazz … sip some equally delicate but energetic Prosecco while watching the skaters land those triple-axles.

Prosecco Recommendation

Adami Extra Dry, Italy

Bobsled & Cabernet Sauvignon Pairing

Bobsled is an adrenaline junkie’s sport if there ever was one, and this event calls for a high-octane wine like Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon Recommendation

Chapter & Verse from Byron & Harold, Australia

Downhill Skiing & Bordeaux Wine Pairing

Downhill Skiing is one of the most classic Winter Olympic events and calls for a classic wine like Bordeaux.

Bordeaux Recommendation

Chateau Larose Perganson 2014

Pair Curling with a Sauvignon Blanc

Curling isn’t the snooze fest that many believe it to be; it’s skilled and intense. It pairs well with a wine that also has a lot of intensity so hurry hard to a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and get swept away.

Sauvignon Blanc Recommendation

Rapaura Springs, New Zealand

Hockey pairs well with Canadian Icewine

She Shoots — She Scores! A Canadian sport calls for a Canadian wine, so score a few goals with a great Canadian Icewine.

Icewine Recommendation

Inniskillin Wines Cabernet Franc, Canada

Ski Jumping & Gamay Noir Pairing

Ski Jumping athletes seem weightless as they soar through the air and land with that big finish. Pair with Gamay Noir, light on its feet with a fair amount of punch to round it out.

Gamay Recommendation

Les Copains d’abord Beaujolais, France

Pair Speed Skating with a Dry Rosé Blend

Don’t waste any time. A speedy sport calls for a speedy, drink now wine. Rosé will always hustle to the finish line in this perfect pairing.

Rosé Recommendation

Valenciso Rioja Rosé, Spain

Biathalon & Brunello Make a Great Pair

Biathalon is the sport that not only goes the distance but requires precision and accuracy. It needs a wine that will do the same, and a Brunello di Montalcino will do just that.

Brunello Recommendation

Caparzo 2013 Brunello di Montalcino, Italy

Snowboarding: Orange Wine

Snowboarding flips for something new and noteworthy. Pair with Orange wine, it may be trendy, but it’s here to stay.

Orange Wine Recommendation

Château de Cartes Vin Orange, Canada

Cross-Country Skiing & German Riesling

Cross-Country Skiing is a cool-climate sport that will pair very well with a cool-climate wine. Try a crisp, racy German Riesling.

Riesling Recommendation

Frey Rheinhessen Riesling, Germany
