Simple Red Wine Hot Chocolate Recipe

 

Move over Hot Toddy. You too, Mulled Wine. We’ve just found your new favourite winter warmer.

Everyone deserves a little decadence to warm our spirits. This drink is the perfect winter drink for wine lovers. Rich chocolate flavour and fruity red wine make for a delicious treat that is sure to get you through any snow day.

Some red wine hot chocolate recipes require an instant pot, but you won’t need one for this easy red wine hot chocolate recipe.

To make this luscious little cup of heaven, use high quality dark chocolate with at least 60% cocoa, or opt for a semi-sweet or bittersweet baker’s chocolate. This will ensure you get those deep, rich flavours. Also, go all out with full-fat whole milk, or even a combo of milk and cream, for real indulgence.

As for your red wine, there’s a couple of different options that work.

For our red wine hot chocolate recipe, we went for ultimate hedonism … darkest of dark chocolate, full fat milk and cream and Ruby Port (see recipe below). The pairing of Port with dark chocolate is a classic match. They go together perfectly as the sweetness of the Port balances the bitterness of the dark chocolate.

If you’re looking for an affordable and cheerful route, a basic hot chocolate (milk, cocoa powder, pinch of salt and sugar) with Merlot makes a delicious red wine hot chocolate. The cherry and vanilla notes in the wine pair well with the sweetness of the cocoa (think chocolate covered cherries).

Red Wine Hot Chocolate Recipe

(No Instant Pot Needed!)

 

Ingredients For Red Wine Hot Chocolate

1/2 cup whole milk
¼ cup of half and half
½ cup of Ruby Port
¼ cup bittersweet chocolate

 

How To Make A Red Wine Hot Chocolate Without An Instant Pot:

  1. Over medium heat, combine milk and chocolate in a small saucepan.
  2. Whisk until smooth and fully incorporated.
  3. Add wine and continue to whisk until heated through.
  4. Take off heat and pour into two mugs.
  5. Top with marshmallows and cocoa powder, whipped cream or cinnamon for extra flavour.
