A red wine grape. It is the most widely planted grape in Bordeaux. Merlot is also grown in most of the same places as Cabernet Sauvignon and the two are often blended together. In general, Merlot has a less tannic profile than Cabernet Sauvignon and often feels softer on the palate. Its flavours often run to mocha and boysenberry. Fine Merlot wines are also produced outside of Bordeaux in California, Chile, Australia, Argentina, Israel and in many other regions. They tend to age a little faster in the bottle, making the wine somewhat faster to attain drink ability in your cellar.
