A term invented by California wineries, for Bordeaux-style red and white blended wines. It combines “merit” with “heritage.” There are only specific grape varieties allowed in the blends. Reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere. Whites: Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. To qualify, the blend must be of at least 2 of the noble Bordeaux grape varieties and no single grape variety can make up more than 90% of the blend. In order to have the word Heritage on a wine label, the winery must be a member of and apply to the Meritage Alliance for approval.
