What is Butterbeer?
a.k.a. “Harry Potter Beer”
In the Harry Potter book series, author J.K. Rowling describes Butterbeer as tasting “a little bit like less-sickly butterscotch”. Butterbeer is the drink of choice by students attending the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Wizards can purchase Butterbeer when spending time in Hogsmeade, at The Three Broomsticks pub and The Hog’s Head. Butterbeer is also sold in Diagon Alley at the Leaky Cauldron.
In the real world, you can find Butterbeer at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL. Or, you can try making it yourself!
How to Make Butterbeer
In the Harry Potter books, Butterbeer is said to be made from butterscotch, sugar, and water. Madam Rosmerta, the landlady of the Three Broomsticks pub, was known to brew an extra sweet variant of Butterbeer using ingredients like “Sugar Shrub”, “Mallowsweet”, and “Moondew”.
When making your own Butterbeer at home, most recipes suggest using butterscotch schnapps, a base liquor, and cream soda.
Is there alcohol in Butterbeer?
Harry Potter and his friend’s favourite drink, Butterbeer, is known to have “very slight alcohol content” and is said to have gotten house-elves drunk. Wizards and muggles can also be intoxicated by butterbeer.
When making your own butterbeer, you can choose whether or not you’d like to include alcohol in your recipe.
Is Butter Beer Gluten Free?
Many celiacs and gluten-intolerant Harry Potter fans worry about going to Universal Studio’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter and not being able to try a famous butterbeer. Well, you’re in luck because Chef Bob Burdick has confirmed that both Butterbeer and the Butterbeer Foam is gluten-free.
