Full disclosure: This is a list of some of the best sparkling wines you can get for under $50 — but they’re not true Champagne.

We’re not trying to trick you, but we understand that a lot of people call any wine that has bubbles “Champagne.” The fact is, only sparkling wine that is grown and produced in the Champagne region in France can actually be called Champagne. We get it though — wine can be tricky and there are a lot of rules just like this one. Even though not all sparkling wine can be called Champagne, there are some really tasty Champagne-style wines that could fool even the most discerning wine drinker.

How to Find Champagne Style Under $50

Look for Traditional Method Sparkling Wine

The trick in finding Champagne under $50 is to find a sparkling wine that is made using the “Traditional Method” or bottle fermentation. This is when the second fermentation (the one that gives wine the bubbles) is made in the bottle, not in a giant tank. We’re not saying that Champagne isn’t worth the price tag. All around the world, Champagne is considered the benchmark of sparkling wine. It’s just that sometimes you might have “Champagne taste on a beer budget” and you need an alternative. That’s why we have this handy list of great tasting traditional method sparkling wines that share some of the qualities of Champagne, but don’t share the premium price tag.
