Three reputable import agencies collaborated for an unforgettable, festival-style tasting on Thursday, November 9, 2017. Partnered with Rodney’s Oysters House in the heart of downtown Calgary, Alberta, there were dozens of excellent wines to sample. It was the ABCs of wine tasting featuring Artisan Wines, BonVida Importers & Distributors and Crush Imports. Mark Kuspira of Crush Imports greeted guests upon arrival with a glass and each agency’s afternoon roster.

Here are the stand-out wines from the ABC collaborative tasting event.

A. Tasty Sparkling Wines

Paltrinieri Radice Lambrusco Di Sorbara Emilia Romagna 2016

BonVida Importers & Distributors

A mouthful? Yes, and not just the name. The Paltrinieri rosé Lambrusco exploded with watermelon jolly rancher, strawberry and kiwi. There was a touch of sweetness to it that balanced the soft bubbles and finished clean. One of the best Lambrusco wines I have ever had. It would be perfect with charcuterie.

Zinck Rose Cremant d’Alsace NV Magnum

Crush Imports

There really isn’t anything more exciting than seeing a magnum of well made, sparkling rose! The Zinck name has become synonymous with quality, affordable Alsatian wines on our market and this is no exception. 100% Pinot Noir, traditional method and brut. With the holidays approaching, these magnums have landed at the perfect time. Quantities are very limited.

Manuel Raventos Conca del Riu Anoia 2007

Artisan Wines

An aged sparkling with strong notes of sourdough and mineral. After spending 7 ½ years on the lees, it might be tough to find the fruit at first, but it’s there and it’s lovely as 2007 was an exceptional vintage. This isn’t a pop and pour for just anyone, but wine nerds and enthusiasts will love this unique Spanish offering.

B. Outstanding White Wines at the Event

Brooks Amycas White Cuvee 2016

BonVida Importers & Distributors

Hailing from the the Eola-Amity Hills sub region of the Willamette Valley in Oregon, Brooks is a certified biodynamic farm. It’s a nod to the noble grape varieties in Alsace (Riesling, Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris) with the addition of Pinot Blanc in the blend. The aroma is complex and inviting with orange blossom, honeysuckle, mineral and tropical fruit. The palate is packed with ripe pear, apricot, melon and citrus with a hint of spice and a slight phenolic texture of red apple skins. With less than 5% residual sugar that whisper of sweet is balanced with acidity to finish crisp.

Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Spatlese 2007

Artisan Wines

Oh the soft, flowing language of Germany makes the name of this wine sound so romantic. Even if you can’t wrap your mouth around the name of this wine, you’re in for a treat. That signature petrol and icing sugar on the nose gives way to a perfectly balanced off-dry palate of honey, almond and baked apple.

C. Remarkable Tasting Red Wines

Finca Nueva Crianza Rioja 2012

BonVida Importers & Distributors

In Spain, the oak of choice is almost always American so it’s unusual for the winemaker to use French oak. But as the name suggests, this is new style Rioja that places more emphasis on the viticulture than on heavy handed winemaking. 100% Tempranillo with more earthy qualities than you might expect in a Crianza. It’s clear this modern producer is letting the terroir shine through.

75 Wine Company The Sum 2014

BonVida Importers & Distributors

The Beckstoffer family is California royalty, farming some of the most famous vineyards in Napa Valley, Mendocino and Lake County. Tuck Beckstoffer is at the head of the 75 Wine Company, which is a tribute to all the great things that happened in 1975, including his family’s decision to settle in the Napa Valley. The Sum is a blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with bold flavours of blueberries, black cherry, vanilla and cinnamon. Ripe, smooth tannins with balanced acidity and alcohol.

Yves Cuilleron Gamay 2016

Artisan Wines

Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Yves Cuilleron is one of the premiere winemakers in the Rhone Valley. It’s just a really yummy wine and I hate to complicate it further. Intense flavour with finesse. A beautiful floral aroma with lots of juicy fruit. Meant to be enjoyed while it’s young and fresh, this is a perfect match for pork dishes or lighter fare.

Fossacolle Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

Crush Imports

According to James Kent of Crush Imports, Marchetti Sergio is the kind of guy you just “want to see succeed so bad because he’s such a nice guy, so humble.” These are the kind of wines I love because you know that integrity shines through in the juice. This is the third generation of family winery, Fossacolle who have been living on and working the land since the 18th Century. The Brunello has so much going on; leather, balsamic, ripe dark fruit, cedar chips and a dusty, grippy tannins balanced with its signature acidity for a clean finish. If the 750 ml bottle isn’t enough, don’t worry – it comes in a magnum as well.
